ShinEtsu KBM-303 – Epoxy Silane Coupling Agent for Mineral-Filled Plastics and Electronic Encapsulation

Epoxy silane that improves filler dispersion in electronic potting and adhesives
PRODUCTS DESCRIPTION

KBM-303 is an epoxy-functional silane coupling agent designed to improve interfacial compatibility between inorganic substrates and organic polymer systems. In use, it integrates smoothly into resin or aqueous systems, providing consistent handling behavior and stable processing without introducing volatility or visible phase separation. Users experience improved formulation uniformity, predictable wetting behavior, and reliable performance during compounding, mixing, and curing stages, especially in systems containing mineral fillers or reinforced materials.

Key features

  • Epoxy Functional Silane - KBM-303 contains epoxy functional groups that participate in chemical reactions with epoxy and other reactive resin systems. This functionality enables covalent bonding during curing, improving interfacial strength between organic polymers and inorganic substrates. The epoxy group remains stable during storage and activates under typical processing conditions.

  • Strong Interfacial Bonding - The silane structure allows KBM-303 to form siloxane bonds with inorganic surfaces such as silica, glass, and mineral fillers. After hydrolysis and condensation, a stable interfacial layer is created, improving adhesion efficiency between fillers and resin matrices. This contributes to improved load transfer and reduced interfacial failure.

  • Low Viscosity Dispersion - With a viscosity of approximately 3 mm² per second at 25 °C, KBM-303 disperses easily at low addition levels. The low viscosity supports uniform distribution in liquid systems without significantly affecting formulation rheology. This enables consistent filler wetting and efficient mixing in resin and solution-based formulations.

  • Chemical Stability - KBM-303 maintains structural integrity when exposed to heat, humidity, and common industrial chemicals. The bonded silane layer resists hydrolytic degradation, supporting long-term adhesion stability. This chemical resistance helps preserve composite performance during processing and extended service conditions.

  • Formulation Compatibility - KBM-303 shows good compatibility with a wide range of polymers, including epoxy, polyurethane, and rubber-based systems. It integrates into formulations without causing phase separation or precipitation when used at recommended concentrations. This allows consistent mechanical and electrical properties across diverse compound systems.

Application
  • Electronics - KBM-303 is used in electronic material formulations to enhance adhesion between encapsulation resins and inorganic fillers. Improved interfacial bonding supports stable electrical insulation and mechanical integrity under thermal cycling. This contributes to reliable performance of electronic components in long-term operation.

  • Adhesives - The coupling agent is applied in adhesive systems to improve bonding between dissimilar materials such as metals, glass, and filled polymers. Enhanced interfacial adhesion supports higher shear and peel strength. This improves structural stability in bonded assemblies subjected to mechanical stress.

  • Encapsulation Resins - KBM-303 is incorporated into encapsulation resins to improve filler dispersion and resin-filler interaction. This reduces void formation and supports uniform curing behavior. Improved interface quality contributes to dimensional stability and environmental resistance.

  • Mineral-Filled Plastics - In mineral-filled plastic compounds, KBM-303 promotes strong interaction between polymer matrices and inorganic fillers. This improves mechanical consistency and reduces filler agglomeration. The result is more stable processing and predictable finished-part performance.

  • Coatings - KBM-303 is used in coating formulations to improve adhesion to inorganic substrates and enhance cured film durability. The silane-based interface improves moisture resistance and reduces delamination risk. This supports consistent coating performance in industrial environments.
