What Is Emulsification?
Emulsification is a process that mixes two immiscible liquids. With the help of emulsifiers, one liquid is dispersed as tiny droplets evenly inside the other liquid to form a stable emulsion. silicone oil cannot mix with water naturally. Through emulsification, silicone oil can be dispersed into water to produce silicone emulsion, which is widely used for water-based defoamers, water-based Release Agents and other products.

Core knowledge
Emulsion systems are mainly divided into water-in-oil (W/O) and oil-in-water (O/W). Most silicone defoamers adopt oil-in-water emulsification system.
Emulsifier is the key raw material. It reduces interfacial tension between oil and water and prevents tiny silicone droplets from re-merging and separating.
Emulsifying equipment, stirring speed, temperature and feeding sequence directly affect emulsion stability. Improper control will cause demulsification and oil floating.
Emulsified silicone emulsion is easy to use. It can be diluted directly with water without organic solvents, and is more suitable for aqueous production systems compared with neat silicone oil.
Note: Medical grade Liveo™360 silicone oil is generally not used in emulsified form. Emulsified silicone is mainly applied in industrial and personal care fields and cannot replace neat silicone oil for pharmaceutical packaging.
