Silicone Oil Spill Handling Methods

What is silicone oil spill?
silicone oil spill refers to the overflow or leakage of liquid silicone oil during storage, transportation or production, forming an oily film on floors and equipment surfaces. silicone oil features stable chemical property and non-flammability, yet it is highly hydrophobic. A spill will create slippery surfaces and bring slip hazards to workers. Large-volume spills may contaminate sewage systems and interfere with wastewater treatment. For medical-grade silicone oil such as Liveo™360, extra control measures are required to prevent cross-contamination in cleanrooms.
Main application scenarios
Silicone oil warehouse management, medical siliconization spraying workshop, chemical raw material transfer area, reactor and pipeline maintenance, laboratory silicone oil operation, chemical tank emergency response.
Core knowledge
Personal protection: Disposable gloves are sufficient for small spills. Goggles are recommended for large spills to prevent silicone oil splashing into eyes. Silicone oil is non-toxic, but it must not be discharged directly into drains.
Small spill treatment: Cover the leaked silicone oil with oil-absorbing pads, lint-free absorbent cloth or dry sand to adsorb and collect the silicone oil. Seal the absorbed waste properly and dispose of it as hazardous waste in compliance with regulations. Do not flush with water directly.
Large spill treatment: Cut off the leakage source immediately, set up barriers to stop spreading. Cover and collect the spill fully with oil-absorbing materials. After collection, wipe residual oil film on surfaces with dedicated silicone oil cleaner to eliminate slip risks.
Medical silicone oil spill in cleanroom: Use lint-free oil-absorbing materials as priority. Verify surface residues after cleanup to avoid silicone contamination on medical devices and pharmaceutical packaging products.
Notes: Do not disperse silicone oil with water. Silicone oil is insoluble in water and water flushing will expand the contaminated area. All absorbed waste after cleanup shall be disposed according to local chemical waste regulations.
