What Is D4 in Silicone?

2026-08-03

D4 in silicone refers to octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, a cyclic siloxane composed of four alternating silicon and oxygen atoms. Each silicon atom carries two methyl groups. D4 is widely used as an intermediate for producing Silicone Fluids, elastomers, resins, and other polysiloxane materials.

The letter D describes a difunctional siloxane unit, while the number 4 indicates that four silicon atoms form the cyclic structure.

What Is the Chemical Structure of D4?

D4 has the molecular formula C8H24O4Si4 and is commonly identified by CAS number 556-67-2.

Its ring contains repeating dimethylsiloxane units:

–Si(CH3)2–O–

Four of these units connect to form a closed ring. This cyclic structure distinguishes D4 from linear silicone oils, which contain longer open chains terminated by specific end groups.

D4 is generally a clear, low-viscosity liquid. Its relatively small molecular size allows it to participate efficiently in ring-opening and equilibration reactions used to manufacture higher-molecular-weight silicone polymers.

Why Is It Called a Silicone Monomer?

D4 is often described as a silicone monomer because its ring can be opened and converted into longer polysiloxane chains.

During polymerization, the silicon–oxygen bonds within the ring are redistributed under controlled catalytic conditions. The opened units join together, creating linear or branched silicone molecules.

The final molecular weight depends on several factors:

  • Catalyst type

  • Reaction temperature

  • Monomer purity

  • Moisture content

  • End-blocking agent

  • Reaction time

  • Equilibrium control

  • Removal of residual cyclics

D4 therefore normally serves as a production intermediate rather than remaining the principal component of a finished silicone polymer.

What Products Can Be Made From D4?

Dimethyl Silicone Fluids

Controlled polymerization creates polydimethylsiloxane fluids with different viscosities. These materials are used in lubrication, release, surface treatment, textile processing, electrical applications, personal care, and industrial maintenance.

Silicone Rubber

Higher-molecular-weight polymers can be compounded and crosslinked into silicone elastomers. Fillers, catalysts, pigments, reinforcing materials, and functional additives are selected according to the required curing system.

Modified Silicone Fluids

Functional siloxane units may be introduced to produce amino-modified, epoxy-modified, vinyl-modified, polyether-modified, or hydrogen-containing silicone materials.

These modifications change compatibility, softness, wetting, adhesion, reactivity, and crosslinking behavior.

Silicone Resins and Specialty Materials

D4-derived siloxane segments may also be used in silicone resins, hybrid coatings, adhesives, sealants, and specialty chemical systems.

The production route depends on the target molecular structure and required performance.

How Is D4 Different From D5?

D4 contains four silicon atoms in its cyclic ring, while D5 contains five.

D5 is formally known as decamethylcyclopentasiloxane. Both belong to the cyclic dimethylsiloxane family, but they differ in molecular weight, volatility, boiling behavior, and downstream processing.

These differences affect:

  • Distillation

  • Polymerization

  • Volatile-content control

  • Cosmetic formulation

  • Residual cyclic testing

  • Product purification

  • Environmental compliance review

D4 and D5 should not be substituted only because both appear as clear cyclic silicone liquids.

Why Does D4 Purity Matter?

Impurities can influence polymerization speed, molecular-weight distribution, catalyst activity, product color, odor, and residual volatile content.

Commercial evaluation may include:

  1. Assay

  2. Water content

  3. Color

  4. Acidity or alkalinity

  5. Refractive index

  6. Density

  7. Cyclic distribution

  8. Metal contamination

  9. Packaging cleanliness

  10. Batch traceability

The required specification depends on whether D4 will be used for industrial silicone fluids, electronics, textile auxiliaries, personal-care materials, or specialty polymers.

A general industrial grade may not be suitable for a high-purity formulation.

How Should D4 Be Stored?

D4 should be stored in tightly closed, compatible containers in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.

Water, acids, bases, oxidizing agents, and uncontrolled contamination should be avoided. Transfer equipment must remain clean because small amounts of foreign material may interfere with downstream polymerization.

Facilities should follow the current safety data sheet for:

  • Ventilation

  • Personal protective equipment

  • Flammability control

  • Spill management

  • Grounding and bonding

  • Waste handling

  • Transport requirements

  • Exposure control

Destination-market regulations should be confirmed before formulation approval or commercial shipment.
