Molykote® 4 is a silicone-based insulating compound formulated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fluid and inert silica filler. It provides excellent dielectric strength and moisture resistance, making it ideal for sealing and protecting electrical connections and rubber-metal interfaces. The compound forms a stable, non-curing grease-like barrier that resists oxidation, thermal degradation, and water washout. It is compatible with a wide range of plastics and elastomers, and remains effective across a broad temperature range. Typical applications include sealing connectors, terminals, ignition systems, and high-voltage insulators in electronics, automotive, and utility equipment.

key features
High Dielectric Strength - Molykote® 4 offers exceptional dielectric performance, maintaining dielectric breakdown strength above 20 kV/mm, even after exposure to 150 °C for 24 hours. This stability prevents electrical arcing and current leakage under high-voltage or high-frequency conditions.
Excellent Adhesion - The compound adheres well to metals, elastomers, plastics, and ceramics. Tested under ASTM D816 standards, Molykote® 4 demonstrates peel strength exceeding 1.5 N/cm on aluminum substrates. Its strong surface adhesion forms a continuous barrier that effectively prevents moisture and air penetration, improving sealing integrity and enhancing the long-term reliability of electrical assemblies.
Rheological Stability - Featuring a semi-flowable consistency, Molykote® 4 can penetrate complex geometries and narrow gaps. At 25 °C, it spreads into a uniform film within 0.5 seconds without sagging or separation. This enables complete surface coverage even on intricate parts, ensuring continuous electrical insulation and mechanical protection in tight or irregular configurations.
Moisture and Water Resistance - The silicone backbone structure of Molykote® 4 provides strong hydrophobicity, with water absorption below 0.1%. After 72 hours of humid aging, insulation resistance decreases by less than 2%. This moisture tolerance ensures stable electrical performance in condensation-prone or high-humidity environments, preventing corrosion, leakage, and short circuits.
Low Volatility - When exposed to 150 °C for 24 hours, Molykote® 4 exhibits a weight loss below 0.5%, significantly lower than organic insulating greases. Its low volatility minimizes evaporation, migration, and volume loss under continuous thermal stress.
Oxidation Stability - Molykote® 4 demonstrates excellent resistance to oxidative degradation. In oxidation induction testing at 200 °C, the compound retains stability for over 500 minutes before decomposition onset. This superior resistance prevents hardening, cracking, or loss of protective properties during prolonged exposure to heat and electrical load, reducing maintenance frequency and extending equipment lifespan.
Electronics - Molykote® 4 is widely used for insulating terminals, connectors, and sensor interfaces in electronic devices. It provides insulation resistivity up to 10¹⁴ Ω·cm, effectively reducing leakage currents caused by humidity or dust. In precision instrumentation and control systems, it ensures long-term dielectric protection and stable electrical isolation.
Automotive - In automotive wiring harnesses, ignition systems, and sensor connectors, Molykote® 4 prevents performance degradation due to heat, vibration, and moisture. With a thermal conductivity of 0.235 W/m·K, it aids in localized heat dissipation and prevents insulation aging from temperature stress, improving overall reliability and extending component life.
Telecommunications - Molykote® 4 is used in telecommunication junction boxes, fiber-optic connectors, and microwave antenna assemblies. It operates reliably between -40 °C and 200 °C, maintaining a low dielectric constant and minimal signal loss. This ensures consistent transmission quality and reliable protection in outdoor and high-frequency communication systems.
Electrical Utilities - In high-voltage switches, power distribution systems, and cable terminations, Molykote® 4 serves as a protective grease to prevent moisture and air ingress. After 500 hours of humidity exposure, contact resistance variation remains below 3%. This enhances electrical stability, prevents corrosion and arcing, and extends the operational life of electrical infrastructure.
