ShinEtsu KP-324 - Silicone Paint Additive for Automotive Topcoats And Plastic Finishes

Offers precise slip control in automotive topcoats, preventing surface defects like craters or fisheyes.
PRODUCTS DESCRIPTION

KP-324 is a low viscosity polyether-modified silicone leveling agent supplied as a clear liquid. It is designed to give precise slip control and smooth film formation in high gloss coatings and automotive topcoats. Users can work with low addition levels while still obtaining easy application, fast wetting and a uniform visual appearance on plastic, metal or composite substrates.

KEY FEATURES

  • Improved Slip – KP-324 enhances slip performance at addition levels typically between zero point zero one and one point zero percent on total formulation. This low dosage is enough to reduce surface friction and give a smoother touch to cured films. In production it helps applicators move spray guns or rollers more consistently across large panels without sticking or drag.

  • Leveling Control – KP-324 improves leveling by lowering surface tension in the wet coating so that the film flows out before drying. With a viscosity range of about three hundred to six hundred square millimetres per second at twenty five degrees Celsius, it disperses quickly and uniformly. This behaviour reduces the risk of craters, flooding and brush marks in demanding high gloss systems.

  • Defect Reduction – KP-324 is effective at preventing common surface defects such as pinholes and fisheyes that arise from poor wetting. Trials in solvent based and water reducible systems show a marked reduction in isolated defect counts when the additive is used within the recommended dosage window. The result is a more uniform appearance that reduces rework and rejection rates on finished parts.

  • Scratch Resistance – KP-324 contributes to improved scratch and mar resistance by promoting an even film thickness and controlled slip at the surface. When the coating cures, the modified silicone network distributes contact stresses more evenly across the film. Laboratory abrasion tests typically show lower haze increase and fewer visible scratch lines compared with control formulations without the additive.

  • Broad Compatibility – KP-324 is a polyether modified silicone that is compatible with many resin families, including acrylic, polyester, epoxy, urethane and fluorinated binders. Its specific gravity around zero point nine seven with a tolerance of about zero point zero three helps formulation balance without significant density mismatch. This wide compatibility simplifies development of multi resin coating platforms using a single leveling agent.

application
  • Coatings – KP-324 is widely used in general industrial coatings where consistent flow and high gloss are required. At use levels from zero point zero one to one point zero percent it improves surface smoothness on metal furniture, machinery housings and architectural components. Producers benefit from easier application, fewer visible defects and more predictable gloss readings across different production batches.

  • Automotive Paints – KP-324 is applied in automotive topcoats and clearcoats to control slip and leveling on body panels and plastic parts. The additive’s viscosity window of about three hundred to six hundred square millimetres per second at twenty five degrees Celsius allows fast incorporation into existing paint bases. This helps paint shops achieve uniform appearance over large surfaces such as hoods and bumpers while reducing polishing and refinishing work.

  • Industrial Finishes – KP-324 supports high performance industrial finishes for equipment, appliances and transportation components. At low dosage it helps maintain sharp film edges and smooth surfaces on complex geometries like corners and recesses. The additive’s good compatibility with acrylic and polyester resins also makes it suitable for baked finishes that require both durability and decorative quality.

  • Inks – KP-324 is used in printing inks to enhance flow, wetting and slip on plastic films and metal foils. Its low surface tension contribution promotes uniform ink laydown at high press speeds, which helps avoid streaks and mottle. Formulators can fine tune slip properties to balance rub resistance and stackability without sacrificing colour strength or drying speed.

  • Plastic Surface Treatment – KP-324 is selected for coatings applied to plastic substrates such as bumpers, trims and consumer housings. The additive improves wetting on low energy surfaces and supports good adhesion of subsequent layers when used within the advised dosage range. This leads to durable high gloss finishes on challenging plastics while maintaining good resistance to scratching and everyday handling.
