Molykote PA-744 - Highly Wear Resistant A/C Compressor Piston Coating

Molykote PA-744 is a heat-cured anti-friction coating that uses a blend of graphite and MoS₂ solid lubricants to create an extremely wear-resistant film on metal parts. It is highly effective for heavy loads and resisting motor oils in engine and compressor applications.
PRODUCTS DESCRIPTION

Molykote PA-744 Anti-Friction coating is a solvent-based, heat-cured dry film lubricant formulated with graphite and molybdenum disulfide solid lubricants in an organic resin binder. After curing, it forms a bonded, charcoal-gray coating designed for highly stressed metal-to-metal sliding surfaces operating under boundary lubrication conditions. This coating is designed to provide reliable lubrication even when traditional hydrodynamic oil films break down, such as during cold starts or low-speed operation.

key features

  • Extreme Wear Resistance - Molykote PA-744 forms a heat-cured bonded dry film with graphite and MoS2 solids, built for highly stressed metal-to-metal sliding. It reduces scuffing and seizure on piston skirts and other contacts under boundary lubrication where liquid oil films break down in service.

  • Wide Temperature Range - Molykote PA-744 remains serviceable from -75°C to 300°C, supporting lubrication during cold-start friction peaks and high-heat duty. The cured coating keeps friction control when base oils thin at temperature and when start-stop cycles repeatedly load the interface surfaces.

  • Cure Schedule - Molykote PA-744 uses a heat-cured resin binder; typical curing is 60 min at 230°C or 90 min at 180°C object temperature. This controlled cure creates a tightly adherent film that resists flaking and maintains coverage on complex piston and bushing geometries reliably.

  • Oil Resistance - Molykote PA-744 is specified for environments with motor oil contact; the cured film is resistant to engine oils and compressor lubricants. It maintains a bonded boundary layer during splash lubrication, helping prevent metal pickup when oil supply is intermittent or delayed.

  • High Load-Carrying Capacity - Molykote PA-744 is designed for high load-carrying duty on stressed sliding areas. The graphite/MoS2 solid lubricant package supports contact pressures typical of compressor and piston applications, providing consistent friction behavior at low speed and during run-in under load.

application
  • Automotive Pistons - Spray or screen-print Molykote PA-744 onto degreased piston skirt zones, then cure 60 min at 230°C or 90 min at 180°C. Use the coated parts in gasoline or diesel assemblies to reduce scuffing during cold start and to stabilize friction through run-in cycles reliably.

  • A/C Compressors - Apply Molykote PA-744 to compressor piston sliding lands or shoes before assembly. After full heat cure, the bonded film provides boundary lubrication when oil circulation is limited at start-up, helping avoid seizure in repeated stop-start compressor duty up to 300°C in service.

  • Plain Bearings - Coat bushings or sleeves with Molykote PA-744 by spray for uniform coverage, then heat cure to lock the film in place. Use on metal-to-metal bearing contacts where grease migration is undesirable and where -75°C to 300°C operation demands stable dry lubrication for uptime.

  • Hydraulic Pistons - Apply a thin, even layer of Molykote PA-744 to piston OD or guide surfaces, cure per specification, then assemble with standard seals. The cured film supports emergency boundary lubrication during pressure spikes or low-speed motion when fluid films are insufficient.

  • Engine Sliding MRO - Use Molykote PA-744 on highly stressed metal guides, sleeves, or sliding fixtures during maintenance. Clean, coat, and heat cure to form a durable boundary layer that resists oil exposure, reducing fretting and start-up wear in cyclic high-load components over long runs.
