Molykote® High Vacuum – Silicone Sealing Grease for Ground Glass Joints and Vacuum Systems in Laboratory Equipment

Molykote® High Vacuum – Silicone Sealing Grease for Ground Glass Joints and Vacuum Systems in Laboratory Equipment

It is a stiff, nonmelting silicone compound designed for sealing and lubricating vacuum and pressure systems.
PRODUCTS DESCRIPTION

Molykote High Vacuum Grease is a premium silicone-based lubricant formulated with high-purity silicone oil and an inorganic thickener, delivering exceptional performance in high-vacuum and pressure environments. With an NLGI grade of 3–4 and, it operates reliably from -40 °C to +204 °C, making it suitable for both cryogenic and high-temperature applications. Its low vapor pressure and high adhesion make it ideal for sealing plug valves, control valves, flow meter bearings, ceramic plug cocks, and synthetic rubber gaskets. It’s also used in optical instruments like binoculars and telescopes to lubricate O-rings and prevent lens fogging.

key features

  • Wide Temp Range - The Molykote High Vacuum Grease performs across approximately minus forty to over two hundred degrees Celsius, supported by penetration stability tests showing only moderate structural change from one hundred seventy to two hundred thirty millimetres per ten strokes.

  • Oxidation Stability - Formulation tests in warm air exposure demonstrate minimal hardening and limited weight change. This stability reduces residue buildup and surface corrosion on joints. Reliable oxidation resistance ensures the grease retains sealing and lubricating properties even in long-term laboratory or industrial service where exposure to airflow and temperature shifts is common.

  • Moisture Resistance - Water exposure assessments show low washout levels and preservation of lubricity under wet conditions. This resistance prevents moisture intrusion into vacuum fittings and protects ground glass joints from sticking or swelling. Even in splash zones or humid environments, the grease continues to provide secure sealing performance.

  • Material Friendly - The grease is compatible with a range of elastomers, metals and glass substrates. Laboratory compatibility screenings confirm that it does not swell, crack or degrade common sealing materials. This reduces the risk of joint deformation and ensures long service life for glassware and metal connections.

  • Low Volatility - Evaporation testing at two hundred degrees for twenty four hours results in a maximum mass loss of two percent, confirming very low volatility. This quality is essential in vacuum systems where vapour contamination must be minimized. The stable formulation reduces outgassing and prevents deposits on sensitive surfaces such as sensors or optical paths.

  • High Adhesion - The grease adheres strongly to glass, metal and ceramic surfaces, helping form an airtight seal even at low pressures. Film retention tests show that the compound maintains interface contact during repeated assembly movements and vacuum cycling. This strong adhesion enhances user control during installation and prevents micro leaks that can compromise vacuum performance.

application
  • Chemical Processing - Used in chemical handling systems to seal joints that connect glass reactors, adapters and sampling components. Its ability to withstand temperature swings and resist oxidation ensures stable sealing during reactions, solvent handling and gas feed operations. This prevents leakage of vapour or gases and supports consistent process performance across extended runs.

  • Water Treatment - Applied to seals and threaded metal or glass connections in analysis equipment and monitoring instrumentation. The grease’s moisture resistance allows reliable operation in damp processing areas. Stable adhesion prevents intrusion of contaminants and supports accurate measurement performance in filtration, purification and dosing systems.

  • Fire Safety Equipment - Used on sliding seals and pressure fittings in fire suppression and detection systems. High temperature stability ensures that sealing performance is maintained near heat sources or in environments with intermittent high temperature exposure. This supports dependable system activation and reduces mechanical seizure in emergency equipment.

  • Optical Instruments - Suitable for binoculars, telescopes and precision optical devices requiring a clean, stable lubricant for O-rings and mechanical interfaces. Its low volatility prevents fogging and protects optical paths. Adhesion stability maintains smooth motion under small adjustments, contributing to consistent focusing and long-term alignment accuracy.

  • Vacuum Systems - Ideal for vacuum pumps, valves, desiccators and ground glass joints, where low vapour pressure and high adhesion are essential. The grease minimizes outgassing and supports secure sealing under high vacuum conditions.

  • Industrial Maintenance - Used in maintenance tasks involving sealing of pressure fittings, gauges and laboratory-grade process tools. The oxidation and moisture resistance reduce maintenance frequency, while stable adhesion simplifies assembly. These benefits support long-term reliability of equipment operating under varying pressures and temperatures.
