Molykote® D Paste – High-Load Assembly Paste for Sliding Metal Interfaces in Automotive and Mechanical Systems

Light-colored, solid lubricant paste for assembly and running-in of metallic components.
PRODUCTS DESCRIPTION

Molykote® D Paste is a light coloured solid lubricant paste designed for the assembly and running in of metallic components in automotive and mechanical systems. It is based on mineral oil combined with finely divided white solid lubricants in a consistency similar to NLGI grade two to three grease. The paste forms an even lubricating film on sliding metal interfaces, giving technicians a smooth, controlled feel during mounting and initial operation.

key features

  • Wide Temperature Range - Molykote D Paste operates from approximately minus twenty five to two hundred fifty degrees Celsius, allowing it to perform under both sub zero and high temperature conditions. This temperature stability helps maintain predictable friction levels during assembly and running in of metal components in workshops and production plants.

  • High Load Support - The combination of mineral oil and white solid lubricants provides strong load carrying capacity on metal surfaces during boundary lubrication. Contact pressure tests show that treated parts sustain higher loads before scuffing compared with components assembled without paste or with plain oil. This supports longer component life and lower risk of damage during first operation.

  • Oxidation Resistance - The formulation shows good resistance to oxidation when exposed to air and elevated temperature. Ageing tests on the base paste demonstrate limited increase in hardness and only a small rise in torque on test bearings after extended running. This reduces the formation of hard residues on metal surfaces and maintains consistent friction behaviour over time. As a result, service intervals can be extended and cleaning effort during disassembly is reduced.

  • Water Resistance - Molykote D Paste maintains its lubricating ability in humid and splash prone environments. Water washout testing indicates low loss of material from metal surfaces, and friction measurements after exposure confirm that the lubricating film remains effective. This helps protect sliding interfaces in machines that operate near cooling water, cleaning fluids or condensate.

  • Material Compatibility - The paste is designed for use on steel and many other metallic substrates without causing staining or galvanic effects. Experience in field applications shows that it can be applied to shafts, splines, bolts and sliding guides without adverse reaction. The off white colour makes inspection easier and helps verify full coverage during assembly. Its controlled consistency allows accurate application by brush or spatula, reducing excess that might contaminate nearby components.

  • Low Volatility - Evaporation loss tests at elevated temperature show that Molykote D Paste has low volatility, meaning the liquid phase remains in the formulation for long periods. This minimises hardening and keeps the paste workable during storage and service. In sealed or semi sealed joints, the lubricant film remains intact without rapid drying, which helps avoid stick slip and noise generation.

application
  • Food and Beverage Processing - Molykote D Paste is used on metallic sliding interfaces in food and beverage processing machines where a light coloured assembly paste is preferred. Typical locations include guide rails, clamping devices and adjustment screws that experience high contact pressure during set up and initial running. The paste’s wide temperature capability and resistance to wash off from incidental splashes support reliable performance through cleaning and production cycles.

  • Textile Machinery - In textile equipment, the paste is applied to cams, sliding blocks and adjustment mechanisms that see oscillating loads and high speeds. Running in these parts with Molykote D Paste reduces friction peaks and wear during early operation, which helps maintain accurate thread handling and fabric quality. Its resistance to oxidation and low volatility are valuable in machines that operate for long shifts with limited maintenance access.

  • Plastics Processing - Molykote D Paste is used on metallic guides, ejector pins and clamping elements in plastics processing machinery. During mould change or tool maintenance, the paste facilitates smooth assembly and disassembly while providing high load support at contact points exposed to clamping forces and elevated mould temperatures. This reduces the risk of fretting and seizure, helping sustain consistent cycle times and mould alignment.

  • Packaging Equipment - In packaging lines, the paste lubricates sliding metal parts such as sealing jaw guides, knife carriers and format change mechanisms. These components often run at high speeds and experience repeated start stop cycles. Applying Molykote D Paste during assembly minimises stick slip and wear during the initial running period and contributes to stable positioning accuracy. Its temperature range allows use near heat sealing stations without loss of film strength.

  • Office Equipment - Precision office devices such as printers, copiers and mailing machines use Molykote D Paste on metal slides, hinges and clutches where controlled friction is needed. The light colour prevents visible staining on nearby surfaces, and the paste’s low volatility helps maintain consistent torque and noise levels over long service periods. This improves user perception of quality and reduces the need for frequent re lubrication in equipment that may operate continuously.

  • Precision Instruments - Molykote D Paste is suitable for precision instruments and measuring devices that contain fine metal slides or adjustment screws. Its solid lubricant content supports smooth micro movements under small loads, while the stable structure resists migration into sensitive areas. The controlled consistency enables very thin application layers, which is critical when tolerances are tight. Using the paste in these applications helps maintain calibration stability and repeatable motion over time.
