Molykote D-7409 - Piston Ring Anti-Friction Coating for High Temperatures & Wear

Molykote D-7409 is a heat-cured anti-friction coating that offers extreme wear resistance, high-temperature performance, and strong chemical resistance for demanding metal-to-metal applications. It provides durable lubrication where oils and greases are unsuitable.
PRODUCTS DESCRIPTION

MOLYKOTE® D-7409 Anti-Friction coating is a solvent-based, grey-black dispersion of solid lubricants, including molybdenum disulfide and graphite, in an organic binder system. It is formulated for application via spraying, dipping, centrifuging, or brushing and requires heat curing (typically 30 minutes at (220 °C) part temperature) to form a durable film. The cured coating operates effectively over a wide operating temperature range of -70 °C to +300 °C (-94 °F to +572 °F) and provides high load-bearing capacity, corrosion protection, and resistance to oil, grease, and solvents.

key features

  • Dry Film Lubrication - Molykote D-7409 forms a bonded dry lubricating film after heat curing at approximately 220 °C. The cured coating eliminates oil migration and lubricant fling-off, providing stable friction control on sliding metal surfaces operating under continuous or intermittent load.

  • Wide Temperature Range - The cured film remains functional from -70 °C up to 300 °C, supporting lubrication in both cold start conditions and sustained high-temperature operation. This temperature stability prevents softening, melting, or lubricant breakdown during thermal cycling.

  • High Load Capacity - The MoS₂ and graphite solid lubricant system supports high contact pressures in sliding interfaces. The coating performs reliably under heavy loads where liquid lubricants are squeezed out, maintaining surface separation and reducing metal-to-metal contact.

  • Chemical Resistance - Once cured, Molykote D-7409 resists degradation from oils, greases, fuels, and common industrial solvents. The solid film maintains adhesion and lubricity in chemically aggressive environments where conventional lubricants lose effectiveness.

  • Corrosion Protection - The bonded coating provides an additional barrier layer on metal substrates, reducing fretting corrosion and surface oxidation. This protection supports extended component life in applications exposed to humidity, vibration, and temperature variation.

application
  • Piston Rings - Molykote D-7409 is applied as a thin dry film coating on piston rings before assembly. After curing, the coating supports controlled sliding during high-temperature engine operation, reducing scuffing and wear during start-up and sustained combustion cycles.

  • Starter Motor Components - The coating is applied to magnetic armatures and sliding contact areas in starter motors. Dry film lubrication ensures reliable movement under heat and vibration without grease hardening, migration, or contamination of electrical components.

  • Automotive Lock Systems - Molykote D-7409 is used on bonnet and hood lock mechanisms exposed to outdoor environments. The cured film provides long-term lubrication without attracting dust, maintaining smooth actuation under temperature changes and weather exposure.

  • Highly Stressed Sliding Areas - Applied to oscillating or intermittent sliding parts operating at low speed and high load. The coating supports stable friction behavior where grease retention is poor and where stick-slip must be minimized under load.

  • Industrial MRO Components - Used for permanent lubrication of machine elements during maintenance or overhaul. Molykote D-7409 supports extended service intervals in high-temperature zones where relubrication access is limited and liquid lubricants are unsuitable.
