Molykote D-7405 - High Load Solid Film Lubricant for Automotive Components

Molykote D-7405 is a heat-cured anti-friction coating designed for metal-to-metal and metal-to-plastic applications under low to moderate loads. It offers excellent dry lubrication properties, avoids stick-slip, and provides good corrosion protection.
PRODUCTS DESCRIPTION

MOLYKOTE® D-7405 is a solvent-based, yellowish, dry film lubricant that uses solid lubricants in an organic binder system. It requires heat curing (e.g., 60 minutes at (120 °C) object temperature) to form a permanent, dry film. The cured coating operates effectively over a wide operating temperature range of -70°C to +200°C (-94°F to +392°F) and is electrically insulating, which helps to eliminate contact corrosion.

key features

  • Stick-Slip Control - Molykote D-7405 is engineered to suppress stick-slip in low-speed sliding by maintaining stable friction behavior after curing, remaining functional across a service temperature range of -70°C to 200°C. The controlled film behavior helps reduce intermittent drag in sliding interfaces where micro-vibration occurs, supporting smoother motion consistency without relying on oil viscosity changes at temperature extremes.

  • Chemical Resistance - Molykote D-7405 maintains film integrity when exposed to common workshop contamination such as oils and greases, supporting stable lubrication performance even after contact with processing residues. The cured coating is specified for operation within -70°C to 200°C, and the formulation’s dynamic viscosity of 4,000 mPa·s at 23°C supports controlled laydown that helps keep coverage uniform when chemical exposure and wipe-down cleaning are expected.

  • Electrical Insulation - Molykote D-7405 provides a dry, resin-bonded barrier that helps isolate dissimilar metal contacts where unwanted electrical continuity can accelerate corrosion pathways. In assemblies that experience cyclic temperatures, the film remains serviceable from -70°C to 200°C, and its cured, non-migrating structure avoids conductive lubricant bridges that can form with wet greases. This supports stable interface behavior without introducing oil films into sensitive contact zones.

  • Load Carry Support - Molykote D-7405 supports low-to-moderate load contacts with a solid-film structure validated by Falex load-carrying capacity of 11,100 N, helping reduce metal contact stress and stabilize sliding behavior under boundary conditions. The coating remains usable across -70°C to 200°C, offering a measurable safety margin for components that see cold-start movement and warmed-up operation, where wet lubricants may thin or migrate.

  • Controlled Application - Molykote D-7405 is formulated for repeatable coating application with dynamic viscosity 4,000 mPa·s at 23°C, supporting consistent deposition via spray or controlled wet methods prior to heat cure. The defined viscosity helps reduce run-off on complex geometries and supports film uniformity, while the cured film remains stable from -70°C to 200°C, enabling process standardization and consistent friction response part-to-part during production.

application
  • Car Door Locks - For internal car door lock components, apply Molykote D-7405 as a thin, uniform coating on pawls, levers, and latch sliding faces after degreasing; then heat-cure to lock the film in place for clean operation. Use the 4,000 mPa·s at 23°C viscosity to maintain controlled laydown on small geometries, and rely on the -70°C to 200°C service range to support cold-weather actuation without oil thickening or dirt adhesion.

  • Self-Tapping Screws - For self-tapping screws, use Molykote D-7405 on thread flanks and under-head bearing surfaces to stabilize torque and reduce seizure during installation; cure the coating so it does not squeeze out like grease. The Falex 11,100 N load capacity supports boundary lubrication during high contact pressure thread forming, while the -70°C to 200°C temperature capability helps keep fastening behavior consistent across storage and assembly conditions, reducing torque scatter in production.

  • Brake Clips - For brake clips, apply Molykote D-7405 to contact edges and sliding support points after cleaning to create a dry, non-oily lubricating layer that minimizes friction noise and corrosion sensitivity. The coating’s -70°C to 200°C service window supports temperature cycling typical near braking hardware, and the cured film avoids attracting abrasive dust. Where clip contact loads spike locally, the 11,100 N Falex rating helps maintain lubricity under boundary conditions.

  • Camera Precision Parts - For camera or precision instrument parts, apply Molykote D-7405 to micro-sliding interfaces and guided contact points where oil migration can contaminate optics or sensors; cure fully to ensure a non-migrating film. The controlled application behavior supported by 4,000 mPa·s at 23°C helps achieve uniform coating on small parts, while -70°C to 200°C service capability supports reliability across shipping, storage, and operating environments without viscosity drift.

  • Seat Adjust Mechanisms - For seat adjusting mechanisms, coat threaded sleeves, detent slides, and small pivot interfaces with Molykote D-7405 after degreasing; then cure to obtain a durable dry film that resists dust pickup. The 11,100 N Falex load capacity supports boundary lubrication during repeated adjustment cycles under occupant load influence, and the -70°C to 200°C operating range helps maintain consistent adjustment force from winter cold starts to warmed cabin conditions.
