MOLYKOTE® D-6818 Anti-Friction coating is a black, solvent-based dispersion of solid lubricants in an organic binder. Formulated for spray application, it requires a heat cure (typically 30-60 minutes at (180 °C) to (230 °C)) to form a durable, low-friction film. This coating is specifically designed for highly stressed metal contacts and performs effectively with low-viscosity oils, significantly reducing wear and improving load capacity compared to conventional coatings. The cured film operates across a wide service temperature range of (-70 °C) to (+310 °C).

key features
Fuel Resistance - The cured MOLYKOTE® D-6818 Anti-Friction Coating demonstrates strong resistance to fuels, motor oils, greases, and industrial solvents, maintaining lubrication performance after prolonged chemical exposure. Laboratory immersion and exposure testing show minimal degradation of the dry film structure, allowing stable friction behavior in environments where components are continuously exposed to gasoline, diesel, or compressor oils.
High Load Capacity - Formulated with solid lubricants such as graphite and molybdenum disulfide, the coating supports high contact pressures typical of boundary lubrication regimes. This load-carrying capability allows components to operate reliably under extreme mechanical stress where liquid oil films cannot be sustained, allowed by the solid lubricant network within the cured film.
Wide Temp Range - The cured dry film operates across a service temperature range from −60 °C to 240 °C, maintaining stable friction control during cold starts and elevated operating conditions. This wide thermal capability enables consistent performance in automotive engines, compressors, and industrial machinery subject to temperature cycling.
Wear Resistance - Wear testing confirms that the cured coating significantly reduces metal-to-metal contact, lowering surface wear rates under repeated sliding and oscillating motion. This wear resistance extends component service life and reduces surface damage in applications involving continuous load and motion.
Chemical Stability - The dry film remains stable when exposed to oils, fuels, and cleaning agents, preventing softening, swelling, or loss of adhesion. This chemical stability supports long-term performance in oil-rich systems and reduces maintenance frequency caused by lubricant degradation.
Spray Application - Designed for industrial spray application, the MOLYKOTE® D-6818 Anti-Friction Coating allows controlled film build and consistent surface coverage. After curing at approximately 220 °C, the coating forms a uniform lubricating layer that supports repeatable production processes and predictable friction performance.
Engine Bearings - Applied by spraying onto cleaned bearing surfaces and heat cured prior to assembly, the coating provides dry lubrication during start-up and boundary lubrication phases. This usage reduces wear during cold starts and protects bearing surfaces even when oil film formation is incomplete.
Compressor Pistons - Used on compressor piston surfaces, the Molykote D-6818 coating is applied before assembly and cured to form a solid lubricating layer. This approach supports smooth piston movement, reduces seizure risk, and maintains lubrication performance under high pressure and oil-exposed operating conditions.
Plain Bearings - Applied to plain bearings and bushings through controlled spray coating, followed by curing, the dry film provides long-term lubrication without oil migration. This method ensures stable operation under load while reducing maintenance requirements in industrial machinery.
Swash Plates - Used on air-conditioning compressor swash plates, the coating is applied and cured to reduce friction and wear during continuous rotational motion. This use supports smooth torque transmission and protects surfaces subjected to combined load and sliding motion.
Industrial Parts - Applied to metal-metal contact components in heavy industrial machinery, the Molykote D-6818 coating provides wear protection and chemical resistance. After curing, it supports reliable operation in environments with high load, oil exposure, and demanding mechanical stress.
