Dowsil AFE-1520 - Food Grade Self-Emulisfing Antifoam

DOWSIL™ AFE-1520 Antifoam Emulsion Food Additive is a 20 percent-active, food grade, silicone emulsion. This antifoam is water dilutable and effective in both hot and cold systems.
PRODUCTS DESCRIPTION

AFE-1520 is a highly effective silicone emulsion defoamer. It appears as a milky white liquid primarily composed of silicone emulsion. It possesses excellent fluidity and dispersibility, spreading quickly and evenly in aqueous systems to deliver long-lasting defoaming and antifoaming effects. It is widely used in industries such as food, beverages, fermentation, agrochemicals, and water treatment, complying with food and environmental regulations. It remains effective even at low concentrations, without causing adverse effects during application.

key features

  • Water-Solubility and Dilutability - AFE-1520 is a silicone emulsion that can be diluted with water as a dispersion medium. Its specific gravity at 25°C is 1.0 g/cm³, close to that of water, ensuring excellent compatibility in aqueous systems. It maintains effective defoaming performance even after dilution, with testing demonstrating high foam suppression at a 1:20 dilution ratio.

  • High Defoaming Efficiency - A viscosity of 6000 cP at 25°C ensures that emulsion particles can quickly diffuse within the foam film and destabilize it. Experimental data shows that at a 0.1% addition level, AFE-1520 can eliminate over 90% of foam within 30 seconds.

  • Effective at Low Concentrations - AFE-1520 maintains excellent performance even at low dosages. Comparative tests show that, under the same volume conditions, the effective concentration of AFE-1520 is approximately one-third that of conventional organic defoamers, meaning that a dosage as low as 50 ppm still produces significant results.

  • Hot and Cold Compatibility - AFE-1520 maintains stable performance in both hot and cold systems. After continuous exposure to high temperatures of 90°C for one hour, its defoaming efficiency drops by less than 10%. Even after storage at low temperatures of 5°C for 30 days, it maintains a homogeneous emulsion without separation.

  • Chemical Stability - With a pH of 4, it exhibits high stability in acidic environments. Acid-base stability testing confirms that it maintains its dispersibility and defoaming effectiveness within a pH range of 3-10, resisting rapid degradation due to fluctuations in the pH of the system. Furthermore, its ingredients are non-corrosive to metal equipment, minimizing damage to pipes and containers and extending equipment life.

  • Economical Performance - AFE-1520 is available in 200 kg packages, making it suitable for large-scale industrial applications. Because it can work at low concentrations, the overall cost of use per ton of treated liquid is about 25% lower than that of ordinary polyether defoamers.

application
  • Food Processing - During meat, vegetable, and seafood processing, proteins or polysaccharides can easily generate large amounts of foam, impacting process stability. Adding AFE-1520 quickly eliminates surface foam, ensuring smooth cleaning and cooking processes. Experiments have shown that using 0.05% AFE-1520 in a meat washing tank can reduce foam levels by 80% within one minute.

  • Beverage Production - Beverages are prone to foaming during the filling and mixing process, affecting filling volume accuracy. The defoaming effect of AFE-1520 can improve filling efficiency and reduce losses caused by foam overflow. In carbonated beverage production, adding 0.02% AFE-1520 can reduce filling errors by over 15%.

  • Fermentation - During microbial fermentation, foam can easily inhibit gas exchange and affect bacterial activity. AFE-1520 can quickly break up foam without inhibiting bacterial growth, ensuring normal oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange within the fermenter. Industrial experiments have shown that fermentation yields increase by 8-10% after addition.

  • Agrochemical Formulations - In the production of aqueous formulations such as pesticides and fertilizers, stirring and mixing often lead to foaming. AFE-1520's low surface tension allows it to spread quickly on the liquid surface, suppressing bubble formation. In liquid fertilizer production, a dosage of just 100 ppm can consistently reduce foaming by 70%.

  • Water Treatment - In wastewater aeration treatment and circulating water systems, excessive foaming can compromise water exchange efficiency. AFE-1520, at a dosage of 50-80 ppm, effectively controls foaming in aeration tanks, improving dissolved oxygen and enhancing water treatment efficiency.

  • Chemical Production - In chemical processes such as resins, coatings, and adhesives, foaming caused by stirring and reactions often leads to defects in finished products. AFE-1520 maintains its defoaming properties even at high temperatures. Experimental data shows that when used in resin polymerization reactors, the bubble defect rate in finished products is reduced by 20%.

  • Feed Processing - In feed fermentation and additive production, foam can easily affect mixing efficiency and material uniformity. AFE-1520, at a dosage of 0.05%, effectively reduces foaming, improving fermentation product consistency and minimizing batch variability.

  • Vegetable processing - During the washing, cutting, and blanching processes, organic matter releases and generates foam, disrupting the production line. Using the AFE-1520 can reduce foam levels to 20% of their original value within 5 minutes, ensuring a continuous and stable processing flow and improving production efficiency.
